Houston Attractions and Sightseeing

Located in southeast Texas, the city of Houston offers a little bit of everything to residents and visitors. Being the fourth largest city in the United States, Houston presents every metropolitan, urban and suburban perk synonymous with cities like New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, but it adds that Texas twist and a great, Southwestern kick.

Houston offers amusement parks, great shopping, restaurants, a quick jaunt to the Gulf of Mexico, professional sports teams, a variety of arts and entertainment and of course, is home to NASA.

Houston Attractions – Museums

Houston is home to many museums, from fine art to history. One of the most popular museums in the city and in the state of Texas is the National Museum of Funeral History. While it’s not an attraction that kids might be highly interested in, it is well done, full of education from an anthropological standpoint, offering phenomenal insight into world and American culture.

Another great museum, and one especially for the kiddos, is the Children’s Museum of Houston, where they offer a “playground for the mind.” Incredibly popular, and very affordable, kids and adults can take part in interactive learning and activities that make education a lot of fun.

Another museum and one of the most popular Houston attractions is the Houston Museum of Natural Science. From dinosaurs to the Burke Baker Planetarium, this Houston museum delves into all aspects of the scientific world.

Houston Animal Attractions

For anyone who enjoys animals there are two great, Houston attractions that should not be missed. The Downtown Aquarium offers “an underwater adventure” to guests through exhibits, fun rides and a unique dining experience.

The Houston Zoo has been a local favorite for many years, presenting visitors with a variety of animal species, as well as interactive, educational exhibits and fun events scheduled to coincide with the annual seasons. October’s “Boo Zoo” is one of the most popular times to visit during the year.

Houston Attractions – Professional Sports

As the fourth largest city in the United States, Houston has no shortage of professional sports teams. The city fields competitive squads for each of the big three: Football, basketball and baseball. The Houston Texans are an NFL team with a growing fan base, and a team talent level that is on the rise. The Houston Rockets have a championship history on the hardwood, and have accessible tickets during the NBA season. The Houston Astros boast one of the best ballparks in all of Major League Baseball (Minute Maid Park), and tickets are always available at a variety of prices. These teams and their stadiums offer some of the best Houston attractions.

Houston Attractions – NASA

On the southeast side of Houston, there lies an establishment that cannot be missed: The Johnson Space Center. This historical site has played a key role in space exploration since its inception. NASA is put on full display nearby at Space Center Houston, a family-friendly, interactive park, full of entertainment, Johnson Space Center tours, exhibits, media productions and the popular Kids Space Place. Space Center Houston is open year round, and available to everyone.
