Things To Do In Houston
As the fourth largest city in the nation and the largest in all of Texas, Houston has plenty to offer when it comes to arts and entertainment, culture, dining, sports, city life, and recreation. But whether you are a new visitor or have been living in Houston for years, it never hurts to get some more ideas about what to do around town. Because after you have exhausted all the delicious Houston dining hotspots, such as Da Marco, Marks, and Tony’s, there’s still the rest of the day to enjoy. To inspire your adventures, here are a few ideas for fun things to do in Houston.
Houston Memorial Park
Houston Memorial Park is the kind of place that never gets old for a local, and if you are a first-time visitor to Houston you might just make it an essential part of your agenda. The park is a perfect spot for a casual picnic and a great place to spend a relaxing afternoon where the kids can run and play or to take a stroll with the doggies. For those who like to break a sweat in places other than the four walls of a gym, Houston Memorial Park is great for runners, walkers, hikers, tennis players, and bike riders. For example, the picnic loop provides a smooth trail for bikers, skaters and runners. (Because of the multi-use trail, make sure you brush up on your riding etiquette before you set out.) Many folks love to come to the park just to lay back and people-watch, so there is something for everybody in this refreshing, beautiful, and natural setting.
Shopping and Eating in Houston
For the bargain hunter in everybody, Traders Village Flea Market may very well be the largest and most diverse flea market you have ever been to. Hundreds of vendors spread over more than 100 acres to hawk their hand-made crafts, fresh food, and much more you won’t be able to find at the big-box mega malls and chain stores. No matter what your interests, you are bound to find at least one treasure for an amazing price. Even if you don’t plan on buying much, it’s fun just to browse all the quirky wares and goods that sellers have to offer. For some in-between shopping sustenance, munch on casual but incredibly tasty all-American eats such as roasted corn on the cob, burgers, and turkey legs, or even some exotic fare such as Thai or Mexican.
The Houston Heritage Society Museum
Although you may not consider yourself a major history buff, you might find yourself fascinated by some of the historic things to do in Houston. The Houston Heritage Society Museum’s nine historic structures are worth visiting for the glimpse they give you of how people lived between 1823 and 1905. For instance, the Kellum-Noble house was built in 1847 and has been restored and furnished to appear as it did in that year. Some of the other historic buildings in Houston include other houses built in the 1860s, a church built in 1890, and a cabin built in the 1820s. There aren’t any facts that a history book can give you that quite compare to standing in the actual locations and buildings that early Americans stood in many decades ago.
The Museum of Health and Medical Science
If you’ve got kids fascinated with the human body and science or if you’re looking to enhance your kids’ appreciation for health and medical science, the Museum of Health and Medical Science is an ideal destination in Houston. It offers interesting exhibits, hands-on things to do, and informative models about the functions of the human body. This Houston museum provides education and insight with a big dose of fun.
